Although you will still come across the term from time to time in certain texts, the word ‘ministry’ is now virtually entirely a thing of the past. As part of the most recent major reforms to Belgium’s federal administrative structure, called the ‘Copernic’ reforms, which took place in 2000, what were formerly known as ‘ministries’ were renamed ‘Federal Public Services’ (FPS). The Ministry of Defence alone retained its former name.

The tasks entrusted to the Federal Public Services are the same as those given to the former ministries. This means that each FPS still has a minister, even though the emphasis is now on providing services to citizens.
